Privacy In the Browser
The following policies explain how your data is handled by us when you are using Ghost Browser.
Data Collection
Ghost Browser itself does not track, collect, or store your browsing history, cookies, or other private data. We do not log what websites you visit or sell any data to third parties.
However, some services within Ghost Browser—such as extensions, search engines, and third-party APIs—may collect data independently. We recommend reviewing their privacy policies.
Ghost Browser may collect limited, non-personal data for the purpose of software updates, licensing verification, fraud monitoring, aggregate feature usage statistics and crash reporting.
Data Sent to Third Parties
Ghost Browser is built on Chromium, which includes APIs and services developed by Google. While we strive to disable or limit unnecessary data sharing, some built-in Chromium features may communicate with third parties by default. This includes:
- Google Safe Browsing (used to protect against malicious sites)
- Search engine queries (if you use a search engine that collects data)
- Search suggestions (enabled by default in some search engines, which may send keystrokes to third parties as you type)
- Navigation error suggestions (some versions of Chromium may suggest alternative URLs by sending browsing errors to Google)
- Spell check and translation services (if using Google’s built-in spell check or translation, text may be sent to Google)
- Third-party extensions (extensions you install may send data externally)
- Chromium APIs (certain APIs interact with Google or third parties—see next section)
Ghost Browser does not have any native features that send data to third parties except for the Private Data Sync feature which allows users to choose a third party storage solution to send their data to.
Chromium Privacy Features and Tracking APIs
Ghost Browser is based on Chromium and includes some of Google’s Privacy Sandbox APIs. These APIs are designed to replace third-party cookies while still allowing ad tracking and measurement. Ghost Browser does not modify or disable these APIs by default, but users have the option to turn them off.
These APIs include:
- Buyers API (Interest Groups / FLEDGE): Enables interest-based advertising without third-party cookies.
- Payments API: Facilitates browser-based payments (pending Chrome storage key migration).
- Trusted Tokens API (Private State Tokens): Helps verify user authenticity (not functional in some Chromium versions).
- Shared Storage API: Allows websites to store cross-context data (disabled by default in Ghost Browser).
- Attribution API: Provides ad conversion tracking data to advertisers.
If you want maximum privacy, you can disable these features manually in Ghost://flags or by using command-line flags.
Information Collected by Us
Ghost Browser does not phone home or send your browsing data to our servers or any other servers except as outlined herein to deliver functionality like Google’s SafeSearch. The only data we receive is related to:
- License validation (when activating and validating a paid subscription)
- Error reports (only when explicitly sent by the user)
- Crash reports (settings for what data is sent are in the browser settings)
- Version checks (to deliver you software updates)
- Fraud prevention data (this includes your device ID and history of authentication to the browser and is required)
Browser Usage Statistics
Ghost Browser may collect limited usage statistics to help improve our software. This data is not linked to individual users and does not include personally identifiable information. Specifically, we may collect:
- Information such as whether Ghost Proxy Control is being used, but never information about the proxies you are using or the sites you visit.
- Whether you are using Dark Mode or Light Mode and which version of the sidebar you are using.
- The number of Workspaces and Identities you have open but not the tabs you have saved to them.
- General usage metrics about feature adoption to improve functionality.
We do not collect browsing history, cookies, or any personal data. To receive a copy of your data please contact us at https://ghostbrowser.com/contact/privacy/.
All other data remains on your local device, and we do not collect telemetry data about your actual browsing history or behavior.
Private Data Sync
Ghost Browser supports optional data sync for users who choose to store their browser profiles securely. This is self-hosted and does not rely on Google’s servers, unless you choose Google Drive as your storage location.
This information never hits our servers for any reason and we do not have access to any synced data. If you use third-party sync services (such as Google, Dropbox, Box, etc.), their privacy policies will apply.
You can also choose to sync your data to an external drive like a thumb drive, external hard drive or your local hard drive.
How to Control Your Privacy
Ghost Browser provides several ways to enhance your privacy:
- Disable Privacy Sandbox APIs: You can turn off tracking-related APIs in Settings.
- Use Multi-Session Isolation: Each session in Ghost Browser operates independently, limiting tracking.
- Review Extensions: Only install trusted extensions, as they may collect data.
- Use a Private Search Engine: Consider using DuckDuckGo or another privacy-focused search provider.
- Disable Safe Browsing: While this feature protects against malicious sites, it sends some data to Google, so you need to determine your preferences for balance of security and privacy.
- Disable Search Suggestions: If privacy is a concern, disable search suggestions in your browser settings to prevent keystrokes from being sent to search providers.
- Disable Spell Check and Translation Services: These may send typed text to Google or other providers.
- Cast: This discovers devices on your local network to detect compatible devices (e.g., Chromecast, Smart TVs and other video or audio enabled displays). No browsing data is sent to Ghost Browser. If Google Cast services are available and not disabled, anonymized usage statistics may be sent to Google through Ghost or other devices.
- Install Page as App: Allows you to install certain websites as applications (PWAs). No data is sent to Ghost Browser during this process. Data may be sent to the web site you convert to a PWA and is subject to their privacy policy.

We may update this Privacy Policy periodically. Any changes will be reflected on this page with a revised effective date.
